Michael KERIN30 was born about 1820 in IRELAND - County Clare - probably. He is ASSUMED ( a calculated guess), to have died before 1920 in IRELAND - possibly He died before 1920 in IRELAND - County Clare - probably. There is no documentary evidence for Michael Kerin, apart from reference on Patrick Kerin's marriage and death certificates. No references have been found to Michael or his children Patrick and Elizabeth, or others, on Web sites or other Irish sources.
His birth and marriage dates are estimates based upon Patrick's claimed birth date. They could be in error by as much as 15 years or more.
It is also possible that Kerin was actually 'Karen' or 'Kerins' 'Kerrins' 'Kairns' [ it is spelt 'Karen' on Patrick's marriage certificate which isn't necessarily significant ] All references since that time have been Kerin.
Mary Ann Kerin ( m O'Dea) lists Michael as her father and Patrick as her witness.

Janine Jones passed on a reference [ from Ireland ] which may or may not be relevant: William Fitzpatrick & Mary Flaherty had three children ( at least) Michael, Elizabeth & Mary.
Michael Kerin was a sponsor to Elizabeth 16/9/1859, along with Mary Kelly.

Bridget then appears to have married Michael Conway ( f Thomas) 27/6/1873, Presbytery Kapunda, when she was 36 yrs, as was Michael.
[ this included because a hoped for clue re Kerins ... ]

I have looked closely at the Kerin / Kain family at Kapunda and I cannot see any way that Mary Kerin is related directly. The fack that Patrick Kerin is a witness and Michael Kerin listed as her father, along with her birth date makes a strong case for her to be Patrick Thomas' & Elizabeth Kern ( m Fitzgerald) sister.
In response to letters I wrote to ODea's in SA a John ODea contacted me and said there was a family anecdote that Patrick Kerin was coming to Australia with an older sister but she took ill. Mary took her place. There is no evidence for this but family stories have a habit of proving to be accurate.

Visit to Ireland 2008 Continuing the 'clutching at straws' ..... as County Clare is the 'home' of the Kerin name and Ballyvaughan the focus of the Kerin family, while in Ireland we spent most of one day in County Clare and a good part of that in Ballyvaughan.
While there I met with Paddy Kerin ( previously arranged). We didn't talk much about possible family connections but about Ireland in general and life in Ballyvaughan in the past. He was a most interesting fellow.
We also visited the local cemetery which contains headstone records of many Kerins.
Later we visited the Catholic Church. Unfortunately the priest was away but the plaque in the church revealed a connection to Australia. After the roof blew off donations were received from Australia towards its repair.
Many of the photos of the visit have been included in the Family section of Michael Kerin.
We also found two McGann graves which strengthens the possiblilty that Michael Kerin was married to Mary Ann McGann; but, that is pure supposition.

Children were: Patrick Thomas KERIN-12, Elizabeth Ann "Elisa / Eliza" KERIN (FITZGERALD)-768.

Patrick Thomas KERIN30 was born about 1845 in IRELAND - County Clare. County Clare is not a large area (58,427 acres) but was quite densely populated in 1845, with 17,395 inhabitants.
Hill River Station [near Clare SA ] where Patrick worked in Australia was larger than the entire County of his birth and probably had a population of a few hundred.

While it is doubtful that Patrick Kerin or his [reported] father owned land. County Clare seems to be confirmed as the 'home of Kerins'. The following reference was found:
Clondagad Civil Parish, Tithe Applotments 1826; Killadysert, Poor Law Union, Island Barony.

SNIPPET: Railway transport began in Ireland with the opening of the Dublin and Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire) railway on 17 December 1834. This first line provided a link between the capital and the ferry to Holyhead, which in turn was connected to London by road. Its contractor, William DARGAN, became the 'Father of the Irish Railways.' He was most involved in the financing and building of most lines up to his death in 1867. Although the Dublin and Kingstown line was a success, investors were slow to put their money into railways, because there was not the same need for cheap, efficient transport as in industrial Britain. In the industrial northeast, however, manufacturers set up the Ulster Railway Company, which launched the second Irish line, Belfast-Lisburn-Portadown, in 1842, and the pace of railway building greatly increased thereafter. During the 1840s, Ireland experienced something of the railway mania then sweeping Britain. From a figure of just over 31 miles in 1842, lines already open or under construction totalled 700 miles in 1850. Investment from 1831 to 1852 amounted to 12.5 million pounds. Government loans were made available under both PEEL and his Whig successor Lord John RUSSELL. Although never carrying the huge volume of traffic of British railways, Irish companies flourished because of the comparatively low cost of land and labour. The lines out of Dublin and Belfast were lengthened. Drogheda (Louth) was reached in 1844.
Armagh came on line with the Ulster railway in 1848. By 1850 Belfast was connected to Holywood, Comber, Newtownards, Carrickfergus and Ballymena. A line from Derry, down the Foyle valley, opened up west Ulster. The Great Southern and Western Dublin-Cork rail link opened in 1849. Cork was also linked to Bandon. The Dublin-Galway line opened in 1851. The Dublin-Belfast link was completed with the building of the Boyne viaduct, at Drogheda, in 1855. There were also many local narrow gauge railways. By the 1850s most of Ireland's railway network was thus in place. The ramifications for the economy and society were unprecedented. Bridges, viaducts, and track excavations impacted dramatically on the landscape.
Travel was greatly speeded up. For instance, the Belfast to Dublin train, in 1857, took 5 hours 20 minutes, half the time of the stage coach. Even the poor could travel on the admittedly spartan third class. Savings of time and money were even greater for goods haulage. Commodities became ever more plentiful and cheaper, particularly in rural Ireland. Railways allowed Irish agriculture easier access to the huge English market. However, the much stronger English manufacturing sector could now flood the Irish market, in the process sending many Irish concerns to the wall. Railway employment accounted for a considerable proportion of the national wage packet. Social changes included standardization of time, the spread of daily newspapers, and the growth of seaside resorts. A whole new class, the commuter, could now live in purpose-built city suburbs. Grand railway stations and hotels underlined the importance and the wealth of the railways. This 'golden age'
lasted to the end of the First World War. -- Excerpts, Peter Collins, St.
Mary's University College, Belfast, contrib. "The Oxford Companion to Irish History, New Edition," S. J. Connolly (2002).
He lived in County Clare Ireland on 1 January 1846. Visit to Ireland 2008
We visited Ireland, South & North during October. The following are a few reflections, given that over my life I have become obsessed with Ireland, mostly through the music & songs played by our family when I was a child.

Watching again "Ryan's Daughter & "Michael Collins" as well as understanding that the Famine of 1845 in which several million people died was not a famine in the true sense of the word. The British exported huge quantities of grain in those years. The British have a lot to answer for over hundreds of years but hopefully it is all forward looking now.

40 Shades of Green !

Dingle Peninsular
:
The town of Dingle is picturesque and friendly.
The Ancient stone house, ring forts etc. are fascinating
The Blaskett Islands, the Heritage Centre and the revival of the Gaelic Language.
The site of the filming of Ryan's Daughter. It all felt real !

Ring of Kerry Picturesque, green & a new scene around every corner.

Carrigaholt, County Clare
Great pubs and a good location from which to tour. Every day was a historical tour .. the O'Dea Castle ( possible connection ), Bunratty Castle, Kilrush, Golf courses and places too numerous to mention.
We also visited the Cliffs of Mohr. Close by lives the sister of old friend Michael McDonagh. He said to just ask anybody and they will know her .... how right he was !
We visited Ballyvaughan, County Clare which might be the birthplace of Patrick Thomas Kerin, Eliza and if true sister Mary Ann. Furth reference to this visit can be found in the Family section of Michael Kerin.

Cross Keys County Cavan
This area gave us greater insight into the "Troubles" between Northern Ireland & the Republic. Many many memorials to the IRA.
This time we could safely travel to Northern Ireland. It appears there is greater wealth in the North. Some of the police stations still have huge wire mesh barriers surrounding them. However, in talking to the people there seemed to be great relief and faith in the peace.
We happened to be in Ireland when the All Irish Football Championship was being played between County Kerry ( South ) & Tyrone ( North). We were surprised that the people in the local pub barracked for Tyrone when they lived in the South. When questioned they claimed Kerry had won it too often and it was somebody elses turn. Is this the "Tall Poppy" syndrome that exists in Australia. Maybe it has Irish origins. We had a great night in the Pub with the locals who treated us like locals ... or at least welcome visitors. They have an affinity for Australia it seems.

It is worth noting that on Cavan Road in Adelaide, there is a Cross Keys hotel !

Our main destination in Northern Ireland was the Devil's Causeway but we returned via Galway and saw quite a lot of Rural Ireland.

Living in the local communities was fantastic and could only be bettered by living with an Irish family and gaining a greater understanding of the culture and history.
Between 1865 and 1886 he was a Farm Labourer in Clare SA - Hill River Station. Patrick Thomas Kerin was employed at Hill River Station, Clare SA. It was originally established by C. B. Fisher and was bought by the Angas Family in 1876.
The Station was possibly the largest operation in Australia and at one time employed 200 people. Patrick probably worked for both the Fisher and Angas owners. Certainly several of his childrfen were born on the station; the earliest 1878.

'A far as Patrick's occupation, I thought he was a wagon driver transporting timber to the mines.'(Marie-jeanne Shaw ) - Tarrawingee mine was an open cut (Trent Niemann). Anecdotal information from grand child Ray Hopkins suggests he was a mailman. We know for a fact that his death was related to an accident involving a horse.
Patrick immigrated before 1870 to Australia - probably 1864, Port Adelaide on the 'Ocean Chief '.877 Immigration - arrival
No reference can be found of his arrival in South Australia (shipping records).
3/3/2008
However, the ODea family history claims Mary Ann Kerin arrived on the Ocean Chief 7th April 1864 with her brother Patrick. A search of the shipping records shows a Mary KAIRNS 19 yrs with the same departure number as Michael Kairns, 20 yrs Irish Catholics from County Clare. The ODea book goes on to say Mary Ann & 'Patrick' walked to Stockport to obtain work. Mary Ann subsequently married Patrick ODea and Patrick Kerin ( of Greenock Creek) was a witness. Her father was listed as Michael Kerin.
There are some odd discrepancies about the ages and dates. If we assume as Mary Ann is supposed to have stated that she arrived on the 'Ocean Chief' the ages stated on the ships record (20 - 1864) , or her marriage age or her gravestone age (20 - 1867) are at odds.
This information seems to be the most likely reality but raises as many questions as it answers.
Similarly the arrival of Eliza( possibly 1867) on the 'Cantebury' from Plymouth. Eliza is definitlly a sister to 'our' Patrick but the 1867 arrival lists her as 14 yrs AND she travelled with a relative (assumed ... same embarkation no.) Mary KEARNS. She claimed to be 20 when married in 1870. It may not be 'our' Eliza !!

Alternatively .....
It is possible he came to South Australia under an assumed name (quite common apparently .. shipping agents avoided taking large numbers of one family). Another alternative is that he arrived in another Australian colony and came to South Australia on a coastal ship.

Notes from the Clare Heritage & Geanological Centre - Corofin near Ennis Co. clare - Ireland
Emigration to South Australia only began in the 1840's and was much encouraged by Charles Bagot, land agent for Bindon Blood who lived at Rockforest, Kilkeedy and who was supervisor of the Burren road system. He chartered a boat, the Birman, which arrived into Adelaide in 1840! His son discovered copper at Kapunda. Several North Clare families, probably prompted by Bagot, settled in the district - Kerin, Canny, Linnane, Davoren etc and all have descendants there to-day. Dr Blood, first medical doctor in Kapunda and first Mayor of the town, emigrated from Corofin in 1844. Part of the town of Clare, in the nearby Clare Valley, the great wine-producing area in South Australia is called Inchiquin. One sees 'Inchiquin Port Wine' in every bar in South Australia
http://www.clareroots.com/emigration.htm

He relocated to in Broken Hill NSW between 1887 and 1888, he was probably a bush mail carrier. The birth of his children provide a clue regarding his move to Silverton / Broken Hill.
Annie was born 1886 at Hill river Station, Clare SA. & Mary Oct. 1888, Broken Hill.
As the rail connection between Terowie & Broken Hill was completed in 1888, it seems most likely that sometime prior to October 1888 is the most likely time of their move.
Patrick died as the result of an accident involving a horse, on 19 October 1897 in Broken Hill NSW - Tarrowangee - Campbell Ck Rd.878,879 He originally worked as a station hand at Hill River Head Station, Clare SA a short distance (by today's standards) from Burra SA.
Tarrowangee where Patrick died is on the road via Stephens Creek ( 30 Miles) North of Broken Hill He was killed in an accident involving a horse.
He was buried on 21 October 1897 in Tarrowangee, near Broken Hill in an unknown grave site.. A visit to Tarrawangee in 2004, revealed there is no defined cemetery. It appears people who died were buried at any place where the ground was soft enough. The only soft ground is adjacent to the large creek and while an unidentified grave was found there are several mounds along the creek. As creeks in this area flood extensively but infrequently it is likely that grave markings have been washed away or wooden markings rotted away. Grave : Tarrowangee near Broken Hill - unknown grave site . Patrick's Marriage Certificate has his surname spelt as 'Karen' (possible Anglo pronunciation as Patrick appeared to be illiterate- it wasn't unusual for English Clerks to use anglo spelling for 'foreign' names. )
Fruitless search .....Ireland
The search for documentary evidence of Patrick Kerin's existence in Ireland, his immigration and useful details regarding employment around Clare and Burra has been without success.
There is always hope that somewhere, some day his story will be found. A nagging thought is that he wasn't whom he claimed to be. If so, who or what was he? On the other hand having a sister tends to anchor him to some sort of real existance as Patrick Kerin. The loss of records in Ireland in the 1920 revolution[ I read recently that is not the case ] , his illiteracy, the sometimes employed method of changing names to get aboard a ship, possible arrival in another state etc are all possible reasons for his mysterious background.
Ironically it was the search for Patrick Kerin that started my Family Tree obsession and after the fairly successful gleaning of facts for about 5000 people, Patrick Kerin remains a 'thorn in my side'. !

Parents: Michael KERIN-507 and Marian ""Mary Ann?""McGann"??" MAGAN (KERIN)-508.

Spouse: 'Euphemia' Mary MCDONALD (KERIN)-13. 'Euphemia' Mary MCDONALD (KERIN) and Patrick Thomas KERIN500 were married on 1 September 1872 in Burra SA - St Joseph's Catholic Church.880 Marie-jeanne Shaw and Trent Niemann have noted that although married in 1872 Patrick's wife Euphemia's first child was born in 1877. It is a complete supposition but interesting nonetheless, that calculations from her death certificate regarding her age, indicate she was actually 16 yrs when married and not 21 as claimed on her marriage certificate. Maybe she married without her father's consent, was 'dragged home' and wasn't 'released' until she was 21 yrs. It may be coincidental but this age coincides with the commencement of her child-bearing. It is very unusual for a delay in child bearing of that order in those days.

James Fitzgerald (Brother in law to Patrick) was a witness to marriage.
An interesting historical aspect & today's re-connection.
Ellen Ryan also a witness: .. 21 yrs at Patrick's marriage. This reference to Ellen Ryan is only included for interest as a descendant also named Ellen Ryan lived in the Tiver Row cottages diagonally opposite the Miner's cottage owned subsequently by Sally Niemann a descendant of Patrick Kerin. Sally would find some spiritual meaning in her choosing to live in Burra and in an almost original miner's cottage as well !

"Mixed marriage" The history of the Irish suggests a deep hatred of any non-Catholics.In colonial Australia at least this it seems was not as clear as we are led to believe. While it is true that Catholics married Catholics almost exclusively in some parts of the colonies it was not always true. Indeed, some Catholics were even married in non-Catholic churches, by non-Catholic priests where there was no Catholic priest available. The same facts emerged in relation to the Germans in Bendigo.
One suspects that life was sufficiently demanding and remote that some of the questions regarding the luxury of bigotry and the lack of opportunity meant prejudices were put aside. Eras of Australian history are characterised by a breaking down of European traditions and today Australians are quite relaxed about 'mixed' marriages between religions and ethnic / cultural groups. There is more Chinese and Aboriginal blood running in Australian veins than is generally acknowledged ! The current negative response to Islamic adherents by other Australians is interesting. It is only a repeat of Australian history many times over in relation to especially the Irish, Chinese, Italians, Greeks etc etc ... Over time these cultures and religions blend into the landscape especially if there is a 'wave' of another cultural group. They become the new 'target' of our suspicions and distrust. It has always been thus but to date it has not resulted in widespread victimisation. Our record related to indigenous Australians is far worse. It must be said though a much more difficult 'assimilation'.
I'm not sure how James McDonald, a Scotsman, felt in 1872 about his daughter Euphemia, marrying a Catholic in a Catholic church. As it appears Euphemia was only 16 (claimed 21) our Patrick may have taken advantage of her naivity !
Given the influence of a mother in a family it is somewhat surprising that the love of Irish music by my Grandmother and her siblings and the on-going adherence to Catholicism, Euphemia must have adopted or at least given 'licence' to the Catholic tradition for it was passed on to her children and subsequently her grand children. Indeed Annie Kerin's children and grand children had a strong faith in the Catholic church. Almost all of Patrick Kerin's descendants would claim 'Catholic' as their religion.

As mentioned elsewhere, Patrick, Euphemia and the family probably moved to Silverton / Broken Hill prior to October 1888. The following was recorded at the official opening for the rail connection.

"The township itself would present a novel appearance to an English eye, but is without exception the vilest place I ever saw.

The habitations are principally wood or iron, and a good number reside under canvas. "

"I should dread spending a night in Broken Hill for, of course, the rough element strongly predominates, and was told as the night wore on it was pandemonium. A visit to Broken Hill Feb 1888 Edmund M Harral

Elizabeth Ann "Elisa / Eliza" KERIN (FITZGERALD)897 was born about 1850 in IRELAND - County Clare. She lived in Burra SA about 1865. She lived in Broken Hill NSW about 1887. In other places in this record there are descriptions of Broken Hill. However, for those who have never travelled the road to that city I hope the photos attached to this section will indicate the sort of country over which my ancestors travelled to reach Broken Hill.

It would seem most of our relatives from South Australia travelled by rail; soon after the rail was complete from Terowie to Broken Hill in about 1886 - 1887.
Earlier travellers and work-seekers often pushed a wheelbarrow with their possessions from Burra to Broken Hill. For some time this feat was replicated as an event to remember the efforts of the early Broken Hill workers.

Rail was used to carry the ore from Broken Hill to Port Pirie on the South australian coast, where it was smeltered and shipped all over the world. Broken Hill made Australia rich.

Even in an air-conditioned vehicle some find the journey tedious; in summer it would have been distressing indeed and not a journey for the faint hearted. It wasn't a day light journey in summer before air conditioned cars. Unsealed roads, numerous Kangaroos and unreliable vehicles made it a trying journey. However in those days ( 1940's & 50's ) a couple of stops to 'boil the billy' ( light a fire & make a cup of tea ) in a sandy gum ( eucalyptus) creek was quite an enjoyable break. Elisa / Eliza lived 160 Mica St in Broken Hill NSW after 1887. She died on 3 June 1925 in Broken Hill NSW.898,899 FITZGERALD DEATH 6 JUNE 1925 "BARRIER DAILY TRUTH"
DEATH OF MRS. FITZGERALD
AN AGED PIONEER

The death occurred of MRS FITZGERALD, of 160 Mica St, about 6.00 O'clock on Wednesday morning last after an illness lasting several weeks. The late Mrs Fitzgerald was born in COUNTY CLARE, IRELAND in c1851, and left for Australia at an early age of 14 years, arriving in SOUTH AUSTRALIA, she married at the BURRA SOUTH AUSTRALIA, in 1872, and later arrived in Broken Hill c 1887, remaining here until the time of her death.
There were 14 children in the family, of which 8 members are still living. JAMES & EDWARD of PERTH WA, GERALD of Railwaytown [ Broken Hill], JOHN & LUCY who resided with their late mother, MRS MCCARTHY OF KALGOOLIE WA, MRS BURKE OF PERTH, and MARY, who has recently arrived from PERTH on a visit to her mother. MR JAMES FITZGERALD predeceased his wife by 9 years. GERALD, EDWARD & PAT FITZGERALD at present of Broken Hill are brothers-in-law.
The funeral took place on Thursday leaving deceased's late residence 160 Mica St., at 11.00 am., a large number of friends following the remains. The Rev Fr. Brennan read the last rites at the graveside. The pallbearers were messrs:- W Kelly, W Hogan, A McCafferty, J Sly (Snr), P.J. McCarthy and J St Clair ??? D B Manglesdorf Undertaker.
She was buried on 4 June 1925 in Broken Hill NSW. Grave : Broken Hill [Photo] We only 'know' Elizabeth as a sister to Patrick because the family in Broken Hill referred to her as such. This is a fairly secure assumption.
Parents: Michael KERIN-507 and Marian ""Mary Ann?""McGann"??" MAGAN (KERIN)-508.

Spouse: James FITZGERALD-769. Elizabeth Ann "Elisa / Eliza" KERIN (FITZGERALD) and James FITZGERALD were married on 14 November 1870 in Burra SA - Kooringa - St Joseph's.435 [Calculating from the Death Certificate it appears James Fitzgerald was married in 1872, however SA evidence suggests 1870 Digger / SA Index states 20 Yrs of age.] It seems James & Elizabeth moved to Silverton / Broken Hill about 1888, which would have been after the Railway from Terowie opened. This was about the same time Patrick & Euphemia Kerin also moved.
A short account of events in Broken Hill stated the following : -
1888-The first live Theatre was opened at W.J. Cummins's Theatre Royal Hotel on August 27. Broken Hill was declared a municipality on September 22. Richard Piper, underground manager of the Proprietary Company became first Mayor.

Barnett Harris rebuilt the Duke of Cornwall Hotel as a two story stone and brick structure.
1889-The Gas Company began supplying its consumers, and Argent Street was illuminated by gas in April.

The first electric light plant to operate in the township supplied electricity for the York hotel in September; a 3 candle-power arc lamp was erected on one of the hotel's towers, and interior lighting was installed. The B.H.P. had introduced electric lighting at the mines in 1887,when Rasp and McCulloch shafts and the smelters, were lit up.
According to a death notice for Elizabeth Kerin [ see notes for Elizabeth Kerin] two of her children were Mrs McCarthy of Kalgoolie and Mrs Burke of Perth. The only possible children to fit this criteria are Annie & Honorah aka Nora or Norah. If this report is correct it would put the stated records on Norah in doubt. Children were: Margaret FITZGERALD-776, Annie FITZGERALD (MOCATTI)-857, Patrick FITZGERALD-870, James John FITZGERALD-770, Honora "Norah" FITZGERALD (BURKE)-771, Edward Nicholas FITZGERALD-772, Gerald Alfred "Gerry" FITZGERALD-858, Mary Helena FITZGERALD-773, Elizabeth A FITZGERALD-774, William John FITZGERALD-775, Margaret FITZGERALD-1559, John "Jack" FITZGERALD-859, Living.

She was generous beyond her means to her grandchildren whom she encouraged to 'call in' if they were near her home. She always had a lolly or treat and loved to chat. If she wasn't in the house it was certain she would be chatting 'over the back fence'. It wasn't unusual to arrive at her home and find her leaning over the front fence chatting to the passers by. Indeed leaning on the front fence was a main form of entertainment in Broken Hill, almost everybody did it!
She enjoyed cooking, playing cards and being with the family. She also loved to sing Irish songs and nursed many a grand child to sleep singing Irish lullabys.

Philip James "Phil" KIRKWOOD was born on 12 July 1905 in Corrigin WA. He was a Managing Director, "Mindrill" a mine drilling equipment manufacturer. Uncle Phil always made people feel special. He spoke to kids as if they had something worthwhile to say.
However, he believed that nothing was achieved without unstinting effort and he demanded this from others as well as himself. He was really tough on his own children.
He was a very successful businessman but a generous person. He brought one of the first transistor radios from hong Kong and gave one each to my brother Grant, & I. He arranged for a visit to his factory and assigned his driver to look after me.
He was well known for his very fast driving. A trip to the beach home at Lorne was one of the scariest events imaginable. He always owned new cars which was a departure from my experience.
