I can never remember him 'putting others down' or 'arguing the point' to the extent that other family members did. He had a chuckle that was his alone and I can never remember hearing him laugh out loud.
He was patient with kids and always took time to explain especially anything mechanical. If the kids did get 'out of hand' he had a voice that was such a contrast to his normal demeanor, there was no doubt that we were in trouble.
As a 'backyard' mechanic he was second to none and the family almost always had an old car at his place for repairs. His own cars were always presented in immaculate condition.
He assisted his son Rodney to renovate an old A or T model Ford. The wheels had wooden spokes that shrunk and 'clacked' as it rounded a corner. We spent hours re-packing the wheels and then driving the back roads around Broken Hill. Alan just kept helping each time we returned, no comment, but obviously he knew what we had been doing.
The inscription on his headstone reflects the sort of person that he was.

Esther Blades had a sister Alice who was baptised 9/9/1783 at richmond near Leyburn, York UK.
They were both the daughter of Cuthbert Blades. Which explains the name for her son Cuthbert Joseph Henry Harris.

StPhillips Church - Sydney
In January 1788 eleven ships and their companies, under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip RN, and carrying around 1400 people, including 759 convicts, arrived on the east coast of what is now Australia to establish a penal colony. The Chaplain of this, the First Fleet, was the Rev Richard Johnson and he conducted the first Christian service in Australia on 3 February 1788.

The wattle and daub church built by Johnson in 1793 was burnt down in 1798. A new stone church named St Philip’s was opened in 1810, and this was replaced by the current building in 1856.

The Rev Cowper, Archdeacon, St Phillips Church, who married Joseph & Esther arrived in 1809 and died in 1858. He was a significant and at one point the only religious figure in NSW.
William Cowper wrote to the Governor of NSW requesting a land grant for joseph Harris. He stated that Harris had been a servant of (the late) Lt Col Johnson for seven years . "Has a wife and children & would want to settle on any land he was given. ( Reel 6064 p 439)

In the early colony, marriages were of two kinds, either by licence or by the publication of banns. As the fees were comparatively high, ?4.4.0, only the more affluent members of the community married by licence.
