Noel Albert LEES was born in Broken Hill NSW. The story of Noel Lees is a most interesting reflection of the times. When he was about 18 and required a birth certificate he discovered that he had been adopted into the Lees family, and that his real name was Walker.
Apparently his mother had died when he was very young and his father was unable to manage the family so Noel was adopted to relatives. He was born in Victoria but lived in Broken Hill until he moved to Adelaide. He died on 30 January 1993 in Adelaide SA. MAGAN (KERIN)³⁰ was born about 1820 in IRELAND - County Clare - assumed.⁹⁸¹ Given the lack of literacy the spelling and pronounciation frequently relied upon the interpretation of the listener. One source suggests that 'Patrick ' to some ears sounded like "Partridge" . Mary Ann ... Marian .... Magan .... McGann etc.

In 1867 Eliza Kearns 14 years travelled with a Mary Kearns 48 years to Adelaide upon the "Cantebury" departed Plymouth 2/10/1866 arrived Jan 1867. This is probably a coincidence but worth recording as possible assistance in "Kerin" search.
If Eliza / Elizabeth had her correct age on her marriage certificate then this would not be her ( age 20 in 1870). However the lack of numeracy might also be an issue. She died before 1920 in IRELAND - County Clare - probably. Magan is a county Meath name, it is possible however that she was born in County Clare.

She appears to have married Peter Maxwell aged 24 ( father Patrick) 4/7/1858 St Johns Kapunda. Peter Maxwell died at Bakers Flat Kapunda, 12/3/1866 aged 32 yrs. Ref 23/105 digger.
Bridget then appears to have married Michael Conway ( f Thomas) 27/6/1873, Presbytery Kapunda, when she was 36 yrs, as was Michael.
[ this included because a hoped for clue re Kerins ... ]

I have looked closely at the Kerin / Kain family at Kapunda and I cannot see any way that Mary Kerin is related directly. The fack that Patrick Kerin is a witness and Michael Kerin listed as her father, along with her birth date makes a strong case for her to be Patrick Thomas' & Elizabeth Kern ( m Fitzgerald) sister.
In response to letters I wrote to ODea's in SA a John ODea contacted me and said there was a family anecdote that Patrick Kerin was coming to Australia with an older sister but she took ill. Mary took her place. There is no evidence for this but family stories have a habit of proving to be accurate.

Mary nee Kerin and Patrick ODea had eight children and lived around Stockport & Terowie. [ I taught at Stockport 1968 - 71 and Peterborough near Terowie 1972 - 78 ]
They were married 1867 but first recorded child was 1873.

Visit to Ireland 2008 Continuing the 'clutching at straws' ..... as County Clare is the 'home' of the Kerin name and Ballyvaughan the focus of the Kerin family, while in Ireland we spent most of one day in County Clare and a good part of that in Ballyvaughan.
While there I met with Paddy Kerin ( previously arranged). We didn't talk much about possible family connections but about Ireland in general and life in Ballyvaughan in the past. He was a most interesting fellow.
We also visited the local cemetery which contains headstone records of many Kerins.
Later we visited the Catholic Church. Unfortunately the priest was away but the plaque in the church revealed a connection to Australia. After the roof blew off donations were received from Australia towards its repair.
Many of the photos of the visit have been included in the Family section of Michael Kerin.
We also found two McGann graves which strengthens the possiblilty that Michael Kerin was married to Mary Ann McGann; but, that is pure supposition.

What is remarkable about the above list is there doesn't appear to have been any infant deaths. Very unusual for this era. Most of the early born children lived to 'a ripe old age' as well.
It must have been fun sitting around the meal table with thirteen boys and two girls although the age spread probably meant they were rarely together as an entire family. Allen MCDONALD was born on 2 June 1871 in Port Victor SA.⁹⁹⁰ He served in the military 8th Bat Regiment 178, 4th Troop, B Squadron ( but never saw active service.) in 1901 in Boer War. See Family Document for Allen McDonald, for the full story. He lived miner in Broken Hill - Cobalt St. in 1903. Ray Keating has indicated that Allen Mcdonald was 'only ever a miner ' . I also had him listed as a Grazier on Glen Lyon Station. My source is unknown!
He was pensioned off after the 'Big Strike' in 1926 as he had dust on the lungs. [ for the uninitiated prior to regulations requiring mining companies to control dust underground, many miners contracted "Dust on the Lungs" which in the worst form was a (I believe) Silicosis. The silica dust caused all sorts of lung complications which led to the demise of many. I suspect my GGGrandfather Diedrich Conrad Niemann died in Bendigo of a similar cause. Allen died on 16 December 1950 in Broken Hill NSW - 416 Cummins St (Home). He was buried after 16 December 1950 in Broken Hill NSW.
