William HOGAN was born about 1820 in IRELAND. The entry of William Hogan is highly speculative. It is based simply on the fact he was a witness to the baptism of Ernest James Niemann, St Killians, Bendigo, 1874. Hogan is a common name but Rose Ann Nolan's mother was a Hogan, which is why this connection has been made. He died in AUSTRALIA. He was buried in AUSTRALIA. Parents: Unknown HOGAN-4612 and Living.

John Hooper : Death notice: Saturday March 7th 1896
. page 4B
On Thursday last, at his residence in Crystal Street, an Old Barrier Identity, Mr John Hooper, passed away. During the past 8 years, in conjunction with his sons he carried on a general store in Crystal St. The old gentleman had a pleasant and unassuming manner, strict integrity and manly straightforwardness and left a host of friends. He was not prominent in politics, but devoted his energies to the betterment of those by who surrounded him. For more than 35 years he was a consistent member of the Primitive Methodist Connection and for 30 years occupied the pulpit with acceptance to the congregation and credit to himself. He was prominent in the Sunday school. 6 years ago, Mr Hooper lost two sons (grown up) in a bathing fatality in Crystal Street, this bereavement preying on him so much that he contracted the disease which carried him off. He has been a colonist for 40 years and a resident of Kapunda, Burra and Moonta in South Australia. The deceased, who was a consistent Christian gentleman, leaves a widow and two sons. The town has lost a good citizen, the church a consistent worker, and his family a good husband and father. Another tragic death affected John and Selina Hooper. On 19th July 1863 at Kapunda, Selina gave birth to twin sons Robert James and Joseph Gregory. On 11th November 1863 Joseph Gregory died of Dysentery. There were also two daughters who were both dead at the time of John's death. He was buried on 7 March 1896 in Broken Hill Wesleyan. Grave : Broken Hill NSW - Hooper John Wesleyan 1896

Robert James HOOPER was born on 19 July 1863 in Kapunda SA.624 Doug Hooper provided me with an extensive document entitled "The Hooper Family, Thomas & Elizabeth Hooper of Bere Alston, Devon, England, and their descendants". - April 2007
I have drawn information relelvant to the Hooper - Triplett Connection to my family.
The complete document is included within my family documents attached to the full family database.

The following is an account of a family tragedy:
Barrier Miner 2 December 1889 Double Drowning Fatality.
A most distressing drowning disaster at Broken Hill occurred at ll.00pm on Saturday night. Prior to that time four of the Hooper brothers of Crystal St. Sth. in company of a young man named Oliphant went to the Underlay Blocks Co. dam, opposite the Globe Hotel in Crystal Street to bathe. They had been in the habit of doing this, with the proprietor's sanction. The depth of water did not exceed 4ft, but in places was 8ft. Olifant and two of the boys were good swimmers, the remaining two preferred to remain in the shallow depths. One of the Hooper brothers got into difficulties with cramp. The others went to his rescue but found he was in deeper water than they dared enter. He lost his head and in an endeavour to get back to the bank, got into deeper water. It became difficult to rescue Hooper, who called for help. The other brother, who could not swim rushed in. The position of the rescuers became highly dangerous. The brother, who had been the longest in the water, grasped in turn two of the swimmers and so wildly plunged about that the three rescuers were unable to do anything. Exhausted and unable to bear against the struggles two of the brothers made way to the bank. Although this took only five minutes, their cries attracted several of the workmen, some remaining on the bank, offering no attempt to help. James Billing and John Hare swam in. The two men had gone to the bottom. The moon was shining and a large crowd had gathered. Billing and Hare persevered until the two brothers, John and Thomas were brought to the bank. A Messenger was despatched for medical assistance and the police. Drs, Groves, Blaxland and Thompson were on the scene and Senior Constable Nolan appeared. The doctors and helpers worked for one hour in an endeavour to restore animation. One brother appeared to recover but the doctors pronounced life extinct.

Both men were married with one child each and lived in the southern end of the town. For three years they were engaged in the business of storekeepers as John Hooper and Sons and Hooper Bros. The men were natives of Moonta, aged 24 and 26 years.

There was no reason to suspect foul play and the inquest was dispensed with. The bodies were interred yesterday (Sunday). A large funeral cortege of over 2000 attended when the remains were removed from the residence of one of the deceased to the new cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. A J Burt of the Primitive Methodist Church, with which the deceased were associated. At the evening service reference was made to the disaster. A magisterial inquiry will be held this afternoon.

Silver Age 3 December 1889 Inquest held on 2 December 1889
Dr Groves deposed that he was called to the Underlay Company's dam at 11.10 pm and saw bodies of Nicholas John Hooper and Thomas Gregory Hooper Dr Thompson was in attendance. Each tried for over an hour to restore animation.

John Hooper deposed the deceased were his sons. The eldest, Nicholas John aged 31 yrs and Thomas Gregory aged 28 yrs and carried on business with him in the storekeeping line at Broken Hill. They were last seen by him at 10.30pm on Saturday. Son Robert James notified father that John and Tom had drowned. John Hooper went to the dam and saw sons in the water and tried to bring them to life but useless. Neither could swim. He had cautioned them about going into deep water. Both were temperate, one a total abstainer.

Robert James Hooper deposed that he went to the dam with his brothers and William Olifant at ll.00pm. They were swimming when brother Thomas Gregory seemed to be sinking. His other brother called out to save him. Tom was throwing up his arms gasping for breath. Olifant helped to get Tom to the bank when Nicholas John Hooper jumped in amongst them causing them to sink. Thomas Gregory leaving Olifant caught Robert James by the waist and Nicholas by the legs and they held him under water until nearly unconscious. Robert James extracted himself with difficulty. Olifant had cramp and he pulled him out. He went for assistance. A quarter of an hour after they first sank, the bodies were brought to the bank. The accident took place in 8 to 9 feet of water.

James Hendry deposed that he was at the Underlay Blocks at ll.00pm. He stripped off to search for the bodies. He recovered one in 5 minutes and 3 minutes later the second was recovered in water 9 to 10 ft deep, the bodies being together by a ledge. J Hendry and J Billing and J Hare brought bodies to the bank. One seemed warm and efforts were made to restore animation by the doctors and others.

Senior Sergeant Saunders gave evidence.

The PM brought in the verdict of death by accidental drowning on 30 November 1889 whilst bathing.
About 1900 he was a Foundry owner in Broken Hill NSW.625 After the death of his father, Robert's mother established a foundry in Cornish Street, Broken Hill with Robert and her other son Henry. On 30th June 1902, clocks were added to the Town Hall Tower. The 5'6" dials were cast in the Hooper foundry. He eventually bought out his mother and brother's shares. In 1937 the foundry was taken over by Parham and Sons and it eventually closed down in 1946. Robert and his wife moved to 11 Robsart Street, Parkside in Adelaide and they lived there until their deaths.

Daniel HOPKINS30 was born before 12 May 1845 in UK Wales - Llanilid, Glamorganshire (Crown Inn).638 There is some confusion (in my mind at least) regarding the birth, baptism and death of this Daniel. Grave 73 in the Llanilid Churchyard indicates he died in 1869 and was two years old. However, the baptism records indicate a baptism in 1845. And there is a 'Daniell' in the 1851 Census. A Daniel also appears in the 1861 Census, aged 16 years,
There may have been two Daniel's; the first dying before the second between 1861 and 1867. No records have been found in this regard.(Dec 2005)

David Edward (B.E.M.) HOPKINS645,646 was born on 15 August 1891 in Tenterfield NSW.647 He was a Band conducter / Piano tuner - repairer. He was awarded British empire Medal (B.E.M.) in Australia - Renmark SA : David Edward Hopkins was awarded the British Empire Medal for his service to the community. It was awarded for his services to music in South Australia as a band conductor with the Australian army during world war two and the Renmark Silver Citizens band that won many band competitions. David died on 14 February 1990. He was buried in 1990 in Adelaide SA - North Brighton. Uncle David was a gentle and considerate man. Indeed he and his brother Tom were a stark contrast ; akmost the bushie and the gentleman image.
He immersed himself in music and when they lived in Renmark SA, he was the 'revered' conductor of the Renmark Silver Citizens band for many years.
He had an amazing 'ear' for music, tuned pianos by ear and said any discordant sound actually hurt him physically. An example of this was a Cuckoo clock that hung in their lounge. It cuckooed out of tune so he dismantled it and re-turned it to perfect pitch.
He was a keen 'family man' and paid close attention to and demonstrated interest in any family member. Anybody who called was always treated to a warm welcome.

"Aunty May" was one of 'nature's people'. She was warm, engaging and interested with a keen sense of humour. She was a huge support to Uncle David. As a citizen of Renmark she was highly respected and much loved by all of the Hopkins family.
It seemed her dining room table was always prepared as if she always expected visitors. And if passing through Renmark she always made people / family welcome.

The author regularly 'called in' as Renmark was on the road between Adelaide and Wentworth. Later when working in the Riverland area she took great interest in our young family and supported us as the only family we had nearby.

David Thomas HOPKINS30,649 was born on 18 April 1848 in UK Wales - Llanilid, Dist. of Bridgend Glamorganshire.650 He was baptized on 11 June 1848 in UK - Wales - Llanilid, Glamorganshire.651 He immigrated about 1877 to AUSTRALIA.652 Between 1893 and 1937 David was a Haulage Contractor, Guest House operator "Stanwell House",& etc in Stanwell Park near Woolongong NSW.653 The story of David Thomas Hopkins and his wife Mary Elizabeth Northey is well documented in the book "The History of Stanwell Park" by M Adams. The pertinent sections of this book are included as attachments within the Media items related to this Family (see Family Photos)
His illiteracy is probably related to the fact that in the 1861 Welsh Census, his siblings are listed by occupation or as 'Scholar' while he at 13 years is listed as 'Farmer's Son'. Of course his older brothers Daniel and George may also have been illiterate. not so his younger siblings [ however advice from Glamorgan Family History Society researcher David Lewis suggests young children - not working were listed as 'scholars ] . There is no criticism intended in reference to his literacy status but it has for some time been a mystery how an older child was illiterate or that some children were formally educated and others not. It is supposed that he was needed as the helper to his father on the farm.

It appears at time of signing brother's (Thomas snr) Marriage cert he couldn't write.
The following is a useful indication regarding Educatioon in South Wales.
....................the population'. He estimated that the number of children in Wales 'attending schools of all descriptions was only 103,247, whereas there ought to have been at the rate of one in eight of the population, 145,392 attending schools', so that there appeared 'to be at least 42,145 children in Wales without day-school instruction', and these children belonged to the classes that were in most need of public sympathy and aid'. Moreover, he was very concerned that the Established Church was much more successful than the Nonconformists in founding schools, and regretted that 38,925 children in Wales attended schools supported by the Church of England, whilst only 14,975 attended schools supported by Dissenters.

David Thomas Hopkins was the son of a farmer in Llanilid, Glamorgan, Wales and it seems he worked on the small farm with his father. His death certificate claims he was married in Wales and he emigrated to Queensland, Australia in his 20's. He spent some time in Northern NSW and then Wollongong / Bulli / Stanwell Park area.
He married Elizabeth Northey who was a 'canny' business woman. The family appears to have prospered at Stanwell Park with David operating a haulage / contracting business, particularly supplying timber to the growing coal mining industry around Bulli. It seems he also participated in the 'heavy work' related to the Guest House which, it seems, was operated by his wife Elizabeth. There are references to him being a sportsman and a jovial fellow.

References to the family by Michael Adams and press notices indicate that David & Elizabeth were significant in the very small 'village' of Stanwell Park.

Stanwell Park
is an icon of Australian history. It was the home of Sir Thomas Mitchell the explorer. [During a trip to Queensland in 2004 we repeatedly came across acknowledgement of his explorations. He 'appeared' at St George and of course the town of Mitchell bears his name. He is buried in Sydney.]

Lawrence Hargraves the 'pioneer of flight' lived and conducted his experiments at Stanwell Park. He is acknowledged as the inspiration for the Wright Brothers designs for the first heavier than air flight in 1903. Indeed Hargraves, using his box kites designs and the winds of Stanwell Park was lifted from the gound by a tethered kite. The story of Hargraves is beautifully written in a book 'Wind beneath his wings, Lawrence Hargraves Stanwell Park" by Michael Adams.
David Hopkins knew Mitchell and Hargraves and is mentioned in the above book. While the Hopkins are not 'historical' they were at least 'touched by history'.
During the late 19th century there were about six families at Stanwell Park. One can imagine it was a close community.

David Thomas "Dave" HOPKINS was born on 15 August 1911 in Broken Hill NSW. As a young teenager he left home and went to live with a family at Merbein. It is said that family wanted to adopt him. He was a Fruit Grower - Merbein. He died in a road accident while driving a tractor on 11 February 1969 in Merbein South Vic. I guess it is somewhat a cruel twist of fate that he died as he did in a road accident when driving his tractor. a machine he was most skilled at using when off the road. Dave was buried in February 1989 in Merbein Vic.655 Grave : AL 38 [Photo] Uncle David was a laconic, 'gentleman of nature'. He understood about the environment before the word became popular. He'd explain facts about nature in a way that made it a great story.
He battled with a fruit block at Merbein, established it from bare ground and it seemed an almost regular event that he'd be wiped out by hail, diseases and poor prices.
He always slept outside on a camp bed, no matter the season or the weather and didn't seem to mind the ferocious mosquitoes.
He had a great sense of humour and rarely seemed to get annoyed or angry. He had a 'slow fuse' when things went wrong, but when he exploded it was better to find a quiet place somewhere.
For a couple of years as a young teenager I drove his tractor while he put the picked Sultana grapes on the trailer. He used to chide me that he'd never make a profit while I kept eating grapes and when I knocked out a strainer post with the tractor he seemed to think it was amusing.
He always had a couple of sheep dogs wandering along with him, sleeping under his bed or waiting for him wherever he was. They understood his gestures and whistles and knew when they were in trouble. He worked at the Yelta sheep yards with his dogs during sheep sales.

George HOPKINS30 was born in 1839 in UK Wales - Llanilid, Glamorganshire (Crown Inn).630,632,633,634,664 "Parents Spoke English & Welsh" a phrase found in reference to their son Edmund. About 1861 he was a Blacksmith, Farrier, Vet, Haulage contractor, Guest House Owner in Moved :- Pentre, Ystradyfodwg, Rhondda - added 's' to Hopkin. He immigrated before 1893 to AUSTRALIA - possibly / questionable.665 The History of Stanwell Park included the following: "For a while his (David Thomas') two brothers George & William joined him, helping to renovate the old but solid cottage into a boarding house." This indicates he definitely travelled to Australia, his arrival details are unknown. It is likely to have been prior to 1893.
His residence in Australia is somewhat contentious. His youngest daughter Catherine is reported to have died in Wales in 1900. It is possible he had returned to Wales prior to this time. Did he leave his family behind (David Thomas is reported to have left a son) ? In 1893 George's three youngest children (if alive) would have been 13 yrs, 15 yrs & 16 yrs respectively.
However this George had a son George. Is it possible the above reference from Stanwell Park history should indicate a newphew to David Thomas rather than a brother.
No records of arrival in Assisted Immigration for NSW or Queensland have been found.(Sept 2005)

George HOPKINS30 was born in 1868 in UK - Wales - Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan.632,633 As mention in his father's notes it was not his father but he who assisted in the building of the guest House at Stanwell Park. This is pure supposition because of the circumstances that surround his father.
