Edward Hollam "'John Holmes'" SMITH¹³⁹¹ was born on 6 November 1889 in Balranald NSW.¹³⁹² At the time of his enlistment 22/12/1914 he listed his Next of Kin as his sister Mrs J Hanlon, Alma St., Hay, NSW. He served in the military 2nd Batallion 4R - Infantry ( joined 22/12/1914 ) in 1915 in Gallipoli. In a book entitled "Gallipoli the Turkish Story " [recommended reading] the Turkish Army was sent to Egypt to capture or disrupt the Suez Canal. The British forces there repelled them after a short battle.
Australian forces expected to be sent to France to repel the 'Hun' (Germans) for the 'Motherland' (Britain) but many were diverted to Alexandria as a staging point for Gallipoli.
The source above indicated that the Turks ( allies of Britain in Crimean War ) had wanted to be neutral. The Germans had been involved in training the Turkish Army and Turkey had two war ships under construction in Britain. At the outbreak of war the British comandeered the ships but didn't return the money ! The Turks became allies of the Germans. In fact a German General was present during the Gallipoli campaign.

He had a ''spell' in hospital in 1917 with Influenza. His record also indicates he was in trouble from time to time for disobeying orders and being AWOL. He had been in the War for some time; misbehavior was understandable. Gallipoli & the Western Front were not a picnic ! 'John Holmes' died "Killed in Action " on 1 January 1918 in Belgium. 'Apart from the races the town [ Louth ] has little appeal. In 1888 the Dunlop property to the south of the town became the first sheep station in the world to use mechanical shears. So important was the event (it was a true revolution in sheep shearing) that the shearing shed was visited by the Governor of New South Wales.'
There is very little at the town of Tilpa apart from the Hotel, a few homes, a hall and from memory a couple of tennis courts. During a trip by boat from Bourke to Wilcannia, we dined at the Tilpa Hotel and camped just across the Darling river [2005]. The Hotel was the 'Watering Hole' and there was an interesting mix of Station Hands, travellers and Truck Drivers. It seemed to have a strong community spirit. The meal was excellent. In 1926 [ prob October ]* my father [ Harry adopted name; originally Herbert]* was born in Hay NSW to Lily Hanlon, his father was listed as unknown, we always thought John Hanlon was his dad, but we have since found out that he was born 18 months after John Hanlon passed away and 9 months before Lily married Albert Evans.
My family meet Lily in 1963 in a nursing home in Goulburn Pencoma's lodge .On meeting Lily she told my dad that he was a twin (we know nothing about this other twin). Lily said my father was adopted out at the age of 3 months old and this was handled thought the Catholic church.She also lead his to believe John Hanlon was his dad.Lily named her next child to Albert Evans after my Dad Harry.( his adopted name ),he was orginally named Herbert after John Hanlon's brother .
Dad had been in constant contact with his brother's Patrick and William .Until he lost contact with them in the mid 1970's around the time Lily passed away."
