Edmond FITZGERALD²¹⁵ was born on 31 May 1855 in IRELAND - County Cork - Longuahily. He immigrated on 2 February 1858 to South Australia - on the "Stamboul". Between 1882 and 1935 he was a Farmer, contractor, miner (De Bavay mine Brok HiLL. Edmond occupation was a farmer in SA until he left due to poor seasons in 1882 with his family and brothers. They went into NSW where he with his team of horses was a tank sinker then he was in a Snaggers Camp in 6/5/1903 at Wilcannia this work involved pulling dead trees from the Darling River for the Paddle Steamers. His occupation was listed at times as a Teamster his death certificate gives his occupation as Horse Driver.[ provided by Ray Keating ]
Stephen Fitzgerald adds the following: "Edmond at one time owned Acacia Downs Station at White Cliffs, near Broken Hill. He was also a horse driver, at some stage living with the Afghans* in their outback camps."
* The Afghans and their Camel Trains were the primary transporters over much of outback Australia. The arrival of Rail pushed them into ancillary routes but they remained important for many of the remote Station properties. The arrival of reliable road transport saw to their demise as a means of goods transport.
There was a home owned by some Afghans in North Broken Hill as late as the 1950's. As children we considered their home with some mystery and daring to ride past on a bicycle and touching the gate was considered quite daring!

Edmond died Bladder Cancer on 12 October 1935 in Broken Hill NSW.^398,399 His death certificate names him as Edward, not Edmond / Edmund. He was buried on 14 October 1935 in Broken Hill NSW. Moved to Broken Hill about 1888 (Jan Jones says 1881) Stephen Fitzgerald claims 1884. Mary Ann 1 (child) birth / death indicates they moved to Broken Hill in 1887 / 1888
He was living in Menindee when child Mary Ann Died - he was aged 29 yrs at the time.

Stephen Fitzgerald provided the following:
" Mary Ann aged 17 when married. Marriage certificate signed in presence of Patrick Fitzgerald (brother ) and Catherine Casey, both of Gumbowie .
In 1884 Edmond & Mary Ann took their young childrenand moved to Broken HIll from Gumbowie, undertaking the trip in a horse drawn wagon. After arriving in Broken Hill area Edmond was a bullock driver between Silverton & Broken Hill ( with his brothers). He was also a pugalist in the Broken Hill area, at one stage of his 'career' owning much of the land in and around Broken Hill, only to lose it just as easily.
Catherine & James ( children) were unnamed and called 'brothe'r & 'sister' for about two years as it was about that long between visits to the church due to work commitments. Those 'nicknames' carried on, with James being known as 'Brud' and Catherine as 'Sis'.
