'Jock' John H. READ was born about 1908 in Broken Hill NSW - probably. Uncle Jock was one of the family characters. He always looked as if he was ready to go out. He was particularly characterised by his care for and guarding of his hat. Nobody touched his hat! One time sitting on the River Bank of the Darling my father handed Jock's hat to my younger brother then aged about 5yrs and told him to throw it into the river. Grant took off towards the river and tossed ... well everybody thought he had .... but he didn't let it go. I think there would have been carnage on the river bank if he had.
Jock loved going to the pictures and I think went twice a week, frequently accompanied by his daughter Rhonda.
He played the button accordian and was usually the main music for singing Irish songs around the campfire. He was a Silverton Railways. The Silverton Railway owned and operated a small section of rail between Cockburn (SA Border) to Broken Hill. It owned and operated the line and its own rolling stock. The line then extended to Port Pirie in SA. Its main function was to carry ore to Port Pirie for treatment (mineral extraction). The line opened 2nd Jan 1888 and closed 12/1/1970 when it was replaced by a 'Standardised' line which followed a different route.
Silverton was originally a mining centre and a number of family births are registered in Silverton.
Uncle Jock & family lived in railway houses ( since demolished ) alongside the rail line and close to a shed which housed the 'trike' [ a small vehicle used to carry workers along the line. He died on 28 March 1978 in Broken Hill NSW. 'Jock' was buried about 28 March 1978 in Broken Hill NSW. Only a little more than a year after the birth of her last child to McKimm she was pregnant with Norman. Charles McKimm 'turned up' after her 1908 marriage to Ryder.
