It must have been fun sitting around the meal table with thirteen boys and two girls although the age spread probably meant they were rarely together as an entire family. Information courtesy of Kathy DiLeo.

I also had him listed as a Grazier on Glen Lyon Station. My source is unknown!
He was pensioned off after the 'Big Strike' in 1926 as he had dust on the lungs. [ for the uninitiated prior to regulations requiring mining companies to control dust underground, many miners contracted "Dust on the Lungs" which in the worst form was a (I believe) Silicosis. The silica dust caused all sorts of lung complications which led to the demise of many. I suspect my GGGrandfather Diedrich Conrad Niemann died in Bendigo of a similar cause.

Extract from the Hercules
When I reached the 'Hercules', I found that James McDonald had been
discovered. His object in secreting himself was his attachment to a young
woman named Margaret McAskill (Euphemia Kerin's mother). to prevent her
proceeding without him, he had declared, in the presence of witnesses that she
was his wife - a legal form of marriage, according to the law in Scotland. As
however, he had thought proper to disregard the established rules, and several
young men from the Perth settlement, the district in Uist to which he
belonged, had threatened me when I had visited the island that they would
prevent the emigration of some of the families I had approved, if they were
not taken, I considered it my duty to show McDonald and his countrymen that
they would not therefore caused him to be delivered into the custody of the
police, and taken before the sherrif, who convicted him under the 15th clause
of the passenger act , in the mitigated penalty of one pound or fourteen days
imprisonment . After being in custody five days, the fine paid to the
Procurator-Fiscal, by subscription amongst the emigrants, he was discharged.

McDonald having cohabited with Margaret McAskill on board 'Hercules' during
my absence in Skye, before he was discovered, I could not have suffered to
proceed without him; and as the whole family consisting of eight adults, might
have refused to go without her and the 'Hercules' would in that case have been
short of her legal complement.I considered it better , having carried out the
law, to allow them to accompany their friends, as the Rev McTavish has
promised to solemnize the marriage according to the rites of the Church of
Scotland. On Wednesday Dr. Carey reported to me that Ann McAskill daughter of
Donald McAskill was pregnant. She was therefore landed and supplied by Sir
John McNeil with the means of returning to Uist where she had a married sister.

Having finished all the necessary arrangements on Saturday Captain Baynton
determined to proceed to sea on Sunday morning. I went on board at eight
o'clock. The first intelligence I received was that a man named Myles
Mackinnon had been found dead in his berth. Not withstanding, Captain Baynton
determined to put to sea unless the law of Scotland requires an inquest. I
returned to the shore , and found an inquest was not necessary . I again went
on board, the steamer came alongside the mortal remains of poor Mackinnon was
sewed up in a hammock covered with the Union Jack and lowered to the deck of
the steamer.Donald Mackinnon who was ill with fever , caused by exposure
during the passage from Skye, was also unshipped. The anchor was then weighed
and the ship was towed out of the harbour. At one o'clock the steamer cast off
and the 'Hercules' stood out to sea, having on board 736 emigrants of all ages
equal to 619 1/2 statute adults, of whom 415 are to be landed in Adelaide
and 341 at Melbourne.
On Monday I saw the remains of Myles Mackinnon decently interred, I returned
to Glascow with Donald Mackinnon on Thursday, and reached Liverpool on Sunday
afternoon by the 'Camilla' in company with him and saw him safely on board the
'British Queen' on his way to Victoria.

As a result of poor economic conditions in Scotland and many farm labourers heading for the goldfields in Australia the 'Highlander Island Immigration Society' [patron Prince Albert] was formed to provide labour for South Australian farmers.
It was funded by fund raising bazarrs, Australian landlords, and the Sa & Vic. governments. The emmigrants themselves signed promissory notes.
In all 5000 migrants came to SA & Victoria under this scheme. The ships used were the 'Medina', 'Hercules' ( 74 gun warship) 'Royal Albert and at least one other.
There were numerous deaths on these journeys.

'Euphemia' Mary MCDONALD (KERIN) was born in 1856 in Clare SA - Hill River Head Station. Euphemia's Mother is listed on her death certificate as Christina. This is incorrect
(Marie-jeanne Shaw)
She was a Midwife. Euphemia was a "Sarah Gamp Nurse" . Otherwise known as a Mid-wife. I am not sure when she started this but Nana told me that she was the "little mother" while Euphemia worked. In Uncle David's Birth Certificate the Nurse present at the birth was "Nurse Kerin". Nana also told me that she had to throw any used water over the floors in the house, this hardened them so that the dust was lessened. (Marie-jeanne Shaw )
She lived in Broken Hill NSW - 177 Gaffney St in 1929. 'Euphemia' died on 31 March 1930 in Broken Hill NSW.1022,1023 She was buried on 1 April 1930 in Broken Hill NSW.1024,1025 Grave : Broken Hill - CATH K 121026 There is little anecdotal information about Euphemia although she has been acknowledged in passing by her grand children as a very 'proper' lady who always dressed in starched and stiff clothes. After Patrick died in 1897 it would have been a challenge raising her children many of whom were in their teenage years. The youngest however was born after her husband Patrick had died.

Parents: James Snr MCDONALD-14 and Margaret MCKASKILL (MCDONALD)-15.

Spouse: Patrick Thomas KERIN-12. 'Euphemia' Mary MCDONALD (KERIN) and Patrick Thomas KERIN501 were married on 1 September 1872 in Burra SA - St Joseph's Catholic Church.881 Marie-jeanne Shaw and Trent Niemann have noted that although married in 1872 Patrick's wife Euphemia's first child was born in 1877. It is a complete supposition but interesting nonetheless, that calculations from her death certificate regarding her age, indicate she was actually 16 yrs when married and not 21 as claimed on her marriage certificate. Maybe she married without her father's consent, was 'dragged home' and wasn't 'released' until she was 21 yrs. It may be coincidental but this age coincides with the commencement of her child-bearing. It is very unusual for a delay in child bearing of that order in those days.

James Fitzgerald (Brother in law to Patrick) was a witness to marriage.
An interesting historical aspect & today's re-connection.
Ellen Ryan also a witness: .. 21 yrs at Patrick's marriage. This reference to Ellen Ryan is only included for interest as a descendant also named Ellen Ryan lived in the Tiver Row cottages diagonally opposite the Miner's cottage owned subsequently by Sally Niemann a descendant of Patrick Kerin. Sally would find some spiritual meaning in her choosing to live in Burra and in an almost original miner's cottage as well !

"Mixed marriage" The history of the Irish suggests a deep hatred of any non-Catholics.In colonial Australia at least this it seems was not as clear as we are led to believe. While it is true that Catholics married Catholics almost exclusively in some parts of the colonies it was not always true. Indeed, some Catholics were even married in non-Catholic churches, by non-Catholic priests where there was no Catholic priest available. The same facts emerged in relation to the Germans in Bendigo.
One suspects that life was sufficiently demanding and remote that some of the questions regarding the luxury of bigotry and the lack of opportunity meant prejudices were put aside. Eras of Australian history are characterised by a breaking down of European traditions and today Australians are quite relaxed about 'mixed' marriages between religions and ethnic / cultural groups. There is more Chinese and Aboriginal blood running in Australian veins than is generally acknowledged ! The current negative response to Islamic adherents by other Australians is interesting. It is only a repeat of Australian history many times over in relation to especially the Irish, Chinese, Italians, Greeks etc etc ... Over time these cultures and religions blend into the landscape especially if there is a 'wave' of another cultural group. They become the new 'target' of our suspicions and distrust. It has always been thus but to date it has not resulted in widespread victimisation. Our record related to indigenous Australians is far worse. It must be said though a much more difficult 'assimilation'.
I'm not sure how James McDonald, a Scotsman, felt in 1872 about his daughter Euphemia, marrying a Catholic in a Catholic church. As it appears Euphemia was only 16 (claimed 21) our Patrick may have taken advantage of her naivity !
Given the influence of a mother in a family it is somewhat surprising that the love of Irish music by my Grandmother and her siblings and the on-going adherence to Catholicism, Euphemia must have adopted or at least given 'licence' to the Catholic tradition for it was passed on to her children and subsequently her grand children. Indeed Annie Kerin's children and grand children had a strong faith in the Catholic church. Almost all of Patrick Kerin's descendants would claim 'Catholic' as their religion.

As mentioned elsewhere, Patrick, Euphemia and the family probably moved to Silverton / Broken Hill prior to October 1888. The following was recorded at the official opening for the rail connection.

"The township itself would present a novel appearance to an English eye, but is without exception the vilest place I ever saw.

The habitations are principally wood or iron, and a good number reside under canvas. "

"I should dread spending a night in Broken Hill for, of course, the rough element strongly predominates, and was told as the night wore on it was pandemonium. A visit to Broken Hill Feb 1888 Edmund M Harral
