Edmond FITZGERALD⁴¹⁶ was born on 31 May 1855 in IRELAND - County Cork - Longuahily. He immigrated on 2 February 1858 to South Australia - on the "Stamboul". Between 1882 and 1935 he was a Farmer, contractor, miner (De Bavay mine Brok HiLL. Edmond occupation was a farmer in SA until he left due to poor seasons in 1882 with his family and brothers. They went into NSW where he with his team of horses was a tank sinker then he was in a Snaggers Camp in 6/5/1903 at Wilcannia this work involved pulling dead trees from the Darling River for the Paddle Steamers. His occupation was listed at times as a Teamster his death certificate gives his occupation as Horse Driver.[ provided by Ray Keating ]
Stephen Fitzgerald adds the following: "Edmond at one time owned Acacia Downs Station at White Cliffs, near Broken Hill. He was also a horse driver, at some stage living with the Afghans* in their outback camps."
* The Afghans and their Camel Trains were the primary transporters over much of outback Australia. The arrival of Rail pushed them into ancillary routes but they remained important for many of the remote Station properties. The arrival of reliable road transport saw to their demise as a means of goods transport.
There was a home owned by some Afghans in North Broken Hill as late as the 1950's. As children we considered their home with some mystery and daring to ride past on a bicycle and touching the gate was considered quite daring!

Edmond died Bladder Cancer on 12 October 1935 at the age of 80 in Broken Hill NSW.^417,418 His death certificate names him as Edward, not Edmond / Edmund. " Mary Ann aged 17 when married. Marriage certificate signed in presence of Patrick Fitzgerald (brother ) and Catherine Casey, both of Gumbowie .
In 1884 Edmond & Mary Ann took their young childrenand moved to Broken HIll from Gumbowie, undertaking the trip in a horse drawn wagon. After arriving in Broken Hill area Edmond was a bullock driver between Silverton & Broken Hill ( with his brothers). He was also a pugalist in the Broken Hill area, at one stage of his 'career' owning much of the land in and around Broken Hill, only to lose it just as easily.
Catherine & James ( children) were unnamed and called 'brothe'r & 'sister' for about two years as it was about that long between visits to the church due to work commitments. Those 'nicknames' carried on, with James being known as 'Brud' and Catherine as 'Sis'.

Edmond Aloysius 'Ned' FITZGERALD was born in 1890 in Broken Hill NSW.⁴²⁰ He was a Grazier in Broken Hill NSW - Acacia Downs Station. At the time of his Mother's death in 1928, he was at Acacia downs Station*, White Cliffs via Broken Hill and he was 37 yrs old.
* Fitzgerald's Station was located on the way to Kayrunnera, west of White Cliffs. The Property was known as Acacia Downs on old maps in recognition of Mary Ann's previous association with Casey's Acacia off Silverton Road. The road to Kayrunnera branches off the main road to Tibooburra just north of Gairdener's Tank and south of Euriowe.

'Although there are almost as many Fitzgeralds in Ireland as pebbles on a beach, the name belongs mainly to Munster. For example nearly eighty per cent of all Fitzgerald births in Ireland in 1890 occurred in that province. In the late nineteenth century there were three hundred and seventy six separate Fitzgerald families in Kerry alone. The name reminds us that the first Fitzgeralds in Ireland - the Geradini - were Norman invaders of Italian origin. Maurice Geraldino came to Ireland in 1172 as a lawless conquerer. In time his descendants became prominant land owners and members of the new aristocracy, particularly in Kerry ; for centuries the history of the county was dominated by the activities of the Fitzgeralds, Fitzmaurice and kindred families"

James FITZGERALD was born in 1846 in IRELAND - County Clare, Corofin. James Fitzgerald b 1845 ) is of particular interest. It is accepted that he is the spouse of Elizabeth Kerin whose family also lived in Burra, Terowie& Broken Hill. He is certainly the witness to his brother John's marriage to Mary Ann Watson. And the signatures on that and Patrick Kerin & Euphemia Mcdonald's marriage certificate although scratchy are very similar. Elizabeth Kerin is the Great Grandaunt tof the author R Trent Niemann. Other evidence is that James' (m Elizabeth Kerin) father was James and a Gerald Fitzgerald is listed as an informant to the death of a child of Elizabeth nee Kerin & James Fitzgerald [Margaret 1888] as her uncle. Anecdotal evidence is that several of the Fitzgerald's at Broken Hill are related although at least two families are not.

Ray Keating, great grandson of Gerald Fitzgerald, brother to James claims to have found a reference for James & Gerald's parents to Corrofin, County Clare which puts some doubt into their Irish origin. He immigrated on 2 February 1858 to South Australia - on the "Stamboul". He was an Agricultural labourer. James died on 11 November 1916 at the age of 70 in Broken Hill NSW.^{451,452,453,454} He was buried on 13 November 1916 in Broken Hill NSW. *(at 1/11/2004 the only Gerald Fitzgerald found who is old enough to be an informant is the son of James Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Dolan. If the title Uncle is correct Margaret's father would be a brother to Gerald, this is significant in proving the connection of several Fitzgerald families in Broken Hill as 'a James' had several brothers and sisters in Burra, some of whom arrived in 1858 on the 'Stamboul '.

And .... The signature of James Fitzgerald, witness on John Fitzgerald's marriage certificate and that of the marriage of Patrick Kerin & Euphemia Mcdonald have a significant number of similarities for them to belong to the same person. Is this the James who married Elizabeth Kerin ? Is this James a brother to John Fitzgerald. If so this ties the James Fitzgerald / Margaret Dolan families to the Kerin family - via the marriage of James Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Kerin.

And .... Two of James & Elizabeth's children, namely Margaret & James had baptismal sponsors which link this James with the family of James and Margaret nee Dolan. Edmund (known son of James & Margaret nee Dolan) Fitzgerald was a sponsor to Margaret child of James & Elizabeth nee Kerin and Gerald & Mary Fitzgerald were sponsors to another son [James] of James & Elizabeth nee Kerin.

And ....
Sister Mary Margaret (Hocking ID 4269) made the following statement contributing to this debate: " We, Margaret [her sister] and I were very close relatives of Lucy, Mary and Jack Fitzgerald, visiting them often. My sister and I always called them Cousin Lucy, Cousin Mary and Cousin Jack."

Note: Sister Mary Margaret and Sister Margaret are the daughters of Margaret Mary 'Madge' Fitzgerald who married William 'Bill' Hocking. 'Madge' was the daughter of Gerald Fitzgerald born c 1861 in Burra SA and it seems with this evidence was a brother to the James Fitzgerald to whom these notes and the above discussion refers.

On the basis of the above the extensive family of James Fitzgerald and Margaret nee Dolan family will be added to this family history [March 2005]

NSWBDM 3999/1891 ELLEN M Kerin - death - could be (is very likely to be) a missing child of James and Elizabeth. This would leave one daughter not accounted for as stated on the death certificates of both James and Elizabeth.

According to Father's [ also James ] death Certificate 1887 his son James age is 33 yrs which means DOB 1854 which is 8 years later than Stamboul records indicate.

Elizabeth Ann "Elisa / Eliza" KERIN (FITZGERALD) and James FITZGERALD were married on 14 November 1870 in Burra SA - Kooringa - St Joseph's.⁴⁵⁵ [Calculating from the Death Certificate it appears James Fitzgerald was married in 1872, however SA evidence suggests 1870 Digger / SA Index states 20 Yrs of age.] It seems James & Elizabeth moved to Silverton / Broken Hill about 1888, which would have been after the Railway from Terowie opened. This was about the same time Patrick & Euphemia Kerin also moved.
A short account of events in Broken Hill stated the following : -
1888-The first live Theatre was opened at W.J. Cummins's Theatre Royal Hotel on August 27. Broken Hill was declared a municipality on September 22. Richard Piper, underground manager of the Proprietary Company became first Mayor.

Barnett Harris rebuilt the Duke of Cornwall Hotel as a two story stone and brick structure.
1889-The Gas Company began supplying its consumers, and Argent Street was illuminated by gas in April.

The first electric light plant to operate in the township supplied electricity for the York hotel in September; a 3 candle-power arc lamp was erected on one of the hotel's towers, and interior lighting was installed. The B.H.P. had introduced electric lighting at the mines in 1887,when Rasp and McCulloch shafts and the smelters, were lit up.
According to a death notice for Elizabeth Kerin [ see notes for Elizabeth Kerin] two of her children were Mrs McCarthy of Kalgoolie and Mrs Burke of Perth. The only possible children to fit this criteria are Annie & Honorah aka Nora or Norah. If this report is correct it would put the stated records on Norah in doubt. Mary Elizabeth "Sr Mary Michael / Mollie" FITZGERALD was born on 1 September 1919 in Broken Hill NSW. On 2 February 1938 she was a Sister of Mercy (Nun) in Parkes NSW. "Sr. Mary Michael was born on 1 September 1919 at Broken Hill. At the age of 12 she attended the then new Juniorate at Parkes and there completed her Secondary Education. She returned to Broken Hill, and entered the convent there on 2 February 1938.
She obtained her Teachers Certificate and is an accredited Music Teacher, Sydney Conservatorium. She has spent most of her religious life as a music teacher in various convents in the Wilcannia-Forbes diocese of NSW and in Mt Barker SA. She has been some time a secondary teacher and convent Superior.
In 2005 she was responsible for the church Liturgy in Parkes parish. She has spent most of her religious life here (Parkes) and has taught many of the residents piano & singing. She is known for her generosity in the town and for all this she was awarded "Citizen of the Year" in 2003."
